Hope Heroes Sending Over 120,000 Meals to Puerto Rico

Chicago, IL – Hope Heroes NFP, an Illinois-based nonprofit, in partnership with The Outreach Program, an Iowa-based nonprofit, shipped over 120,000 nutritious meals to hard-to-reach hurricane survivors in Puerto Rico. Meals provided through The Outreach Meals program include tomato basil and pasta, instant apple cinnamon oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, and fortified rice and bean casserole. Meals provided by The Outreach Program are part of a 40,000-pound shipment for the grand-opening of the Hope Heroes Puerto Rico branch office in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. The sea-based transportation is being provided free of charge by Good Samaritan Shipping Ministries, a nonprofit transportation organization.

“The people of Puerto Rico continue to struggle, and we want to help,” said Floyd Hammer, founder of The Outreach Program. “We are glad to provide meals so Hope Heroes can help people rebuild the bridge to their lives.” These meals, formulated by Iowa State University’s Food Science Department, are fortified with nutrients and vitamins to provide survivors with proper nutrition.

“We provide more than just a bottle of water and a blanket, we are community hope providers” said Ryan Gergen, Founder and Executive Director of Hope Heroes NFP. “These meals are another link in the chain of the community rebuilding we provide.  Nutritious meals are critical to the physical and mental health of crisis survivors along their journey to recovery.”

“To date, we have provided more than 500,000 meals to Puerto Rico, but the need continues,” said Hammer. “We continue to welcome financial donations for meals or groups willing to host packaging events to provide the meals. Every little bit helps.”
